The TG/Sockets communications server "automatically" starts on the System i and provides advanced system management function such as error messaging via system operator, SMTP email, and SNMP network management protocol. The TG/Sockets communications modules provide detailed diagnostic logging, automatic restart, and open systems TCP communications interfaces. TCP secure sockets connectivity is also utilized within other platforms and operating environments as MVS and AIX.

TG Sockets Server provides a reliable, efficient and scalable solution for time & attendance transaction processing. The time clock, LANPoint 7 Data Collection Terminal acts as a communications client to the System i Server and connects only when transactions are available to process. If the host server is unavailable due to maintenance activity or network failure, transactions are stored on the time clock until the system is available, at which time all transactions are forwarded to the System i host application system.
